How do I make downloaded files (not apps) go to my SD card

When I download a file (eg a pdf or an mp3 from a web page in Chrome) it seems to get handled by a pair of apps - "downloads" and "download manager", and the file gets downloaded to the directory "/storage/emulated/o/download" in the phone memory. How can I get it to go to the SD card?

- my handset is a Motorola G (2nd Generation)
- my android version is 5.0.2
- the app "downloads" shows a list of downloaded files, but there are no settings that I can find (beyond which order to display the list in).
- the app "download manager" shows in the list of apps in phone settings, but I can't see any way to open it, or change app settings.
- I have ES File Explorer and I changed the download folder in that, but it makes no difference to android's behaviour.
- to be clear again, I'm not talking about where apps get downloaded to or installed. Just where files from the browser get saved by the "download" app.

Please can anyone help? I've googled, but I can't find anything about the "downloads" app or changing its settings. I am forever running out of space on the phone (not the SD card) and this would help.

Welcome to the forums. Can you manually move the files in ES? The function of setting the download location may be broken.
