Welcome to Android Central! First, go to contact.google.com on your computer browser to see if you had actually entered your contacts into your Google account. I always recommend doing this, since your contacts automatically sync with the cloud, and are therefore easily recoverable if something happens to the phone.

If they're not in your Google account, then it can be tricky to get the contacts, since they're not saved in a discrete file that you can easily copy. Contacts saved locally to the phone are saved in an SQLite database file in a protected system directory, which you can't access unless the phone is rooted.

You mentioned that the digitizer is broken -- does this mean that it doesn't respond to touch at all, as far as you can tell? If you're not sure, you could try connecting the phone to a TV screen via MHL adapter and see if you can operate the phone using the touchscreen.
