How do I recover deleted messages?

I accidentally deleted a message and I need to get it back. I searched online but nothing really helped. Some look dodgy aswell. Is there a way to do this without having to install anything..well..dodgy? And is it a simple way?

Did you have them backed up anywhere? If not then they are most likely gone for good.

hmmm...really silly question...but how would I know if they have been backed up? And where would they be? If I remember..I think with the phone setup it might have asked me about a few things relating to backing up but not quite sure
