I am in the same situation unrooted TB running 2.11.605.9 that I want to root. Understand about having to down grade but have lots of apps & data I don't want to loose... Any recommendations on how to back-up unrooted TB and save data?
Thanks,

Titanium backup for apps and data works great. Pro version will give you more functionality.

I'm sorry, I forgot about that. Thank you for correcting me.

Could root be done, then titanium backup run, A CWM backup run, then a new ROM?

I just used the Revolutionary method to downgrade from .9 to .5, I was fine with doing a factory reset. I wanted to have as clean a phone as possible.

I also used MyBackup from the market for apps and data back up, it worked perfectly, and you can backup pre-root, then you just install the app post root/ROM load, and it will restore your previous backup.

I will say this as a root noob, this method was fairly simple, just read and re-read everything before you start.
I loaded Gingeritis 3D v1.2 and it worked awesome right out of the box. Also that ROM has the radio baked in so not secondary radio load was required.

I was able to flash the liquid 3.2 rom. It was my first root attempt and i have to say I love this rom. I would like to flash a sense based rom, but I'd rather wait for the ICS update to be pushed out. How do you like the gingeritis rom? any issues so far?

The problem is that you have to downgrade the OS prior to starting the root process, because it won't work with the current software version. In order to downgrade, you'll need to endure a factory reset, which WILL wipe all personal data off of the device.

Now, just so we're clear, here's what is meant by "factory reset" or "full wipe":
- All Apps
- All data associated with those apps
- Contacts and calendar
- SMS and MMS messages (as well as email downloaded via POP3, if applicable).
- All personalized settings

Essentially, you'll be going back to the state the phone was in when you took it out of the box, but there do be aware that a full wipe will NOT erase anything off of the SD card. So your pictures, music, videos, etc will be untouched. Also, unless you changed the default settings, your contacts and calendar are synced with your Google account, so they'll be automatically downloaded to the device once you sign in. Also also, any apps you've installed via the market are logged with your Google account as well, so your device will also automatically download and re-install all of your apps for you once you've logged on. The DATA associated with those apps will be gone, but at least you don't have re-install each one.

Check out "My Backup" -- to unlock all features, you do need to be rooted, but it does give you some functionality to back some stuff up prior to attempting the root process that may make life easier.

Bottom line though: just suck it up. If you want root, you'll have to deal with a factory reset. If the thought of restoring your phone sounds too complicated or tedious or simply unacceptable, then you're probably not the kind of person that should root your phone anyway. (and I mean no offense to anyone that falls in this category).
