How do I run DEX?

Ok, so I bought a USB-C to HDMI adapter. When I plug the Note 9 into the adapter I see a toast message saying "HDMI connected". Then the Note 9's screen is mirrored onto the TV display. I can't figure out how to switch it to DEX mode.

I believe some cables aren't compatible, for some reason (yay USB-C problems!) but in theory you should just see a pop-up when you plug in asking to start up either mirroring or DeX.

Is your dongle a powered one? I think I read somewhere that non-powered ones didn't work.

I guess I'll have to purchase an "official" dongle. Mine is powered and it didn't make a difference whether power was injected or not.

If u look it up there was an article on ac a while back where he showed which one to buy and use with the s9 plus and it worked.

Try setting the HDMI mode to DeX. Go to settings, connections, more connection settings, HDMI mode. Change it from mirroring to Dex.

Thanks, but there's no HDMI mode on the Verizon version.

Have you tried going to the drop down menu? There should be an option in the notification panel to switch to DeX. DeX has worked with my off-brand HDMI to USB-C adapter on a TV. It even worked when I tried a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter with a monitor!

Move to 3:46 if you just want to get to the point of going from mirrored to full screen (DEX).

BTW that cable he's using appears to be the same one I bought at amazon - UNI USB C to HDMI Cable. The one I got is 6 foot, but there's also a 3-foot version.

Also, check your 'dongle's' instructions, if any... Some (for some bizarre reason) need a specific sequence to work properly: plug in first, TV second, phone third or something like that.

Catch is battery drains fast with Dex. Needs adapter that allows charging at same time. Wireless charging along with Dex mode would run hot.

OP here...

That would be great information but I see nothing in my notification tray that references DEX. There's nothing to tap on as he would suggest.

well, i have the apple usb-c media dongle, i use it to "dock" my macbook so i can use it with a 24" monitor. Whats awesome is that i can use that same dongle with my Note 9 and everything works in Dex mode, from my apple keyboard and dell wired lazer mouse.

However, if i plug in my S9, it only mirrors my S9, it does not go into Dex mode.

Have you checked the video/instructions above? If the phone is in mirroring mode, you need to change it to DeX.

That option doesn’t show up and there is nothing in the notification panel.

Would you happen to have a Verizon unit? Those are the ones I've seen that, for some reason, don't have the option kick in...
