It depends on which email app you're using and how you have it set up. If it's not set to sync, or it's set to sync every hour or something, you have to manually tell it to download anything that may have come in since the last time it synced. I use Email and one oof the settings is push - which means "send me an email as soon as you get it, I'm not going to ask you for emails". It's about the most efficient way to set a phone up, since you have all your emails and you don't waste battery asking the email server for emails when there are none. (The Email app can be set up to use any email account.)
