This is Android, not Windows - you don't close then any more than by exiting if the app has an exit function or using the back button. If Android needs the RAM space, it'll kill the app (even if it's still running - then bring it back later in the state it was in).

Hold the HOME button for a couple seconds and you will get a page full of all running apps. Hit the CLEAR button at the bottom right on the screen! Not a bad idea to do this after you open a lot of different apps. Saves the battery too!

Add the "active application" widget to a home screen. Tapping on that will give you all the options to manage them. Heed what Rukbat says,though.
