That depends on the carrier and the phone. Normally you have to look in the phone log, unless you have "badges" in your launcher (little circles showing the number of emails, texts, phone calls, etc., waiting), or you use an app that tells you that you have a voicemail - see play.google.com/store/search?q=voicemail%20notification&c=apps.
