Android Central Question

My phone just updated to pie. Now, when I open my messages app the whole top half of my screen is now filled with an off white box that says "messages" very big in the middle of the off white box. Is there any way for me to get it back to where my text message conversation threads fill the entire screen again? It's super annoying to go half way down the page to get to my first message.

What device do you have? What app are you using? Have you done anything or tried anything to fix the issue?

Without knowing the answer to any of the vital questions that would really help us help you I would suggest clearing the cache for that app and/or trying to uninstall it and install it again. Sounds like something didn't optimize or got out of wack with the upgrade.

Sounds like you got a Samsung. No there's no way to fix that. It's by design in OneUI. The idea is for the first option be reachable when using one hand use without having to sacrifice stable holding. So they have huge headers which go away when you scroll past them.

Yeah that's what I was thinking but I have an S10 and my headers aren't as big as the OP describes but I'm using messages+, a Verizon app, so maybe it's not formatted the same. I know that was one of things they were touting about the S10+ since it's such a tall screen with One UI but I haven't really experienced anything on that magnitude.

It only affects Samsung apps. Since you're using a different app, it's not formatted the same as other Samsung apps.

I'm seeing the same thing on my Note8, which recently updated to Android 9 Pie and OneUI. It happens in Messages and in Settings.

But this phone has the magnificent S Pen stylus. One-handed use is literally like having one hand tied behind your back. For me, it just wastes screen space and makes me do extra work.

You're walking down the street with coffee in the othet habd, you get a message, and you take out your phone, do you take out the stylus as well? How? By dropping the coffee? Or would you rather do hand gymnastics to reach the top part of the phone?

Remember, there are several phones under Samsung.

Besides, entire videos and reviews of this update had been released since October.

Actually, I'm sitting on my keister at home with both hands free. :) I totally understand how this new design is intended to help people in the situation you describe, and that while it is counterproductive on the Note8 it may be an improvement on other devices. But it is counterproductive on the Note8, and maybe some other devices as well, and I think those of us using those devices, and people who prefer styluses even on non-S-Pen phones, ought to have an option to recover this screen space. Not a life-transforming problem, but for some of us, a problem.
