how do i stop on screen notifications on the lg g2 d800

how do i stop the lg g2 screen from lighting up with every text message? i was using hangouts (which solved this problem) but now hangout will not send photos properly to iphones. thank you

open the messaging app. hit the menu icon on top right (the 3 little vertical dots), then notification settings and uncheck message pop up and preview.
