How do I stop these useless popup notifications?

I'm using Lollipop on my Nexus 5, running Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp as well as some other chat programs. Whenever my phone is open and another message comes in, I get this popup notification at the top of my screen - but if I tap the notification, it doesn't open the message or the chat application. It just sits there, blocking the top half-inch of my screen, showing a partial message. Worthless? What am I doing wrong?
