How do I turn off backup for a single folder?

This question may be due to an incorrect understanding of how Android backups work but all the tutorials I've read about Google backup is that either none or all of the folders on the internal drive are backed up to Google Drive.

I would like to be able to create a folder that is ignored by Google's backup.

My current solution is to purchase phones with a SD card slot. But perhaps I'm wrong in assuming that the SD card is not backed up.

The Google Backup feature doesn't automatically back up the documents on your phone. It's intended more for system settings and app data. If you go to the Settings>Backup menu, you'll see that under "Active backups," it lists what gets backed up (on my Pixel 2 XL running Pie, I have App Data, Call History, Contacts, Device Settings, Photos & Videos, and SMS Text Messages).

Or are you talking about Google Photos auto backup?
