How do I turn on the flash on my camera?

Camera app - flash icon allowing any changes

I have just moved from Windows Phone to my first Android (just because of an app I need for my new job is not on WP)
I have been getting to grips with Android and when I use the camera I cant seem to turn on the flash. Any suggestions?

Edit: The flash works with a flashlight app and the icon on the Camera App is greyed out.

There are many camera apps, some give more control over things than others. Assuming the phone has a flash (the cheaper ones don't), most of them only use the flash if it's a dark enough scene (or the spot you're metering is dark enough) to need the flash. It's not a Nikon D7100.

I have tired it in a dark room (no lights on) - there is a flash - and flashlight app works

Sorted it, I had HDR on - when its set to Auto or Off the flash works.
