Sounds like the phone is locked and the OP stuck their own SIM in it. That's why it's asking for a code - to unlock the phone to use the SIM from another carrier. That's what AT&T locked phones do when you stick a SIM from another carrier in it.
Got to ask for the code from the original carrier. And hope the phone is paid for and not blacklisted.
