Welcome to Android Central! Do you have an official Samsung S View case, or a 3rd party one? Check the system settings for an Accessories menu -- if you find it, look for an option to turn on S View. If the phone doesn't support S View, then it might not support generic smartcovers cases either. These kinds of cases typically work by activating a magnetic sensor in the bezel. Take any magnet and pass it slowly over the entire bezel of the phone while the screen is on. If the screen turns off consistently while holding the magnet over a specific area of the bezel, then it does support generic smartcovers, but then you'd have to confirm that you have an actual smartcover (as opposed to a flipcover that is not designed to activate the magnetic sensor).
