when i put my at&t sim card in my verizon galaxy s5 phone
it keeps saying phone activation sim from unknown source

The issue may be that its SIM locked which is pretty common for Verizon & AT&T to do so you can't jump carriers without paying off the contract first. If its paid off and you are contract free, you should only need to go into the radio settings and tell it to use global settings instead of CDMA/LTE only.
