How do message notification sounds work?

Message Notification Sounds

Isn't my message notification supposed to work when someone replies to a message I sent? It only makes the sound when I am off the message page where our conversation is going on.

Welcome to Android Central! I don't believe the messaging app will notify you of a message that appears in the conversation you're currently looking at, since you're already presumably aware of the new message.

I recently updated to 4.4.4 and after that my text replies no longer vibed or audibilized while app was open. After talking at length to ATT, Samsung, and the blogosphere, the Samsung rep told me it was the update, which has a new default setting of not notifying when the text app was open. i have proved this to myself to be the case with a friends phone running 4.4.2 which audibilized and vibed replies in a text string with the app open sitting side by side with my phone running 4.4.4 which displayed the incoming text with no notification. the rep confirmed this being the new default and was his personal experience since updating his phone as well. I am not happy with this as wel,l as i would send a reply and set phone down, put in pocket, whatever, and now i must close screen or app to hear replies come in. Very disappointed with new default setting, would like to see this made into a toggled setting, but right now closing screen or app only way to get replies to make sound or vibe work on replies. Both of phones used to find this out were ATT and i confirmed test with a friend at works Galaxys5 on UScellular that his with 4.4.2 notified when app open as well.

Thanks for testing that out--the behavior might vary between devices and Android versions. I was basing my response on my Nexus 5--sorry for the wrong info!
