How do you choose which app to download?

There are a lot of apps in the Google Play store, sometimes there are multiples with similar functionality. As a user and developer, I'm curious on how you guys choose which apps you want to download. Is it by rating? number of downloads? or the graphics?

I give most weight to ratings and number of reviews, and am a bit leery of apps with few downloads.

Also, an app being recommended elsewhere on the web is a good thing.
