How do you lower keyboard?

When typing into text boxes, the keyboard sometimes is placed over the box on a lower part of the screen. On an iPad, for example, there is an icon that indicates how to lower the keyboard so that you can place the cursor in the box (that is now uncovered because the screen lowered).
