How do you mute the phone when it is locked?

How do you mute the phone when it is locked? I don't just mean temporarily, like when you turn it face down or hold your hand over the screen. I mean when you are in a quiet place and want to change the volume settings until you are ready to turn the volume back on. This feature seems so basic and so important to most people. It used to be easy on my Note II. Any ideas?

You can drag down and access your quick settings when locked.

Yup. Unfortunately, though, the process isn't completely silent. If you tap the Sound icon, it vibrates before it gets to Mute mode. The vibration is actually audible and distracting in a quiet environment--like if you're watching a play and suddenly realize you forgot to mute your phone.

You can pull down the notification Shade and tap Do not disturb. DND has setting to silence all or just allow through what you want, i.e. a certain phone # , alarms or calendar events

Thanks everyone.

I would have to change my settings for Do Not Disturb to silence the phone completely. Right now my settings allow calls from contacts. That would not work when I am in a hurry.

I tried pulling down the Quick Settings and pressing the Sound icon until it changed to Mute. Yes, it passed through Vibrate on the way, but you really can't hear it vibrate like you would with the older phones.

Someone else said you can press the Power button and quickly press the Volume button before the power window goes away. That works but it takes 2 hands and is awkward.

Samsung, please put a Mute icon on the lock screen or enable one of the 3 physical buttons to immediately mute the phone when locked. Like Blackberry, remember? This is not an insignificant problem for most users.

DND is what you're asking them to add and they already did. You just choose to use it another way. Sometimes that's the problem with Android, so many choices. But had they made DND silence all someone would've complained they didn't have options in DND.

Can I ask why you have DND set to all contacts? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of DND?

No, DND has a much different purpose than a simple Mute mode. True, you could use DND as simple Mute, but that would be wasting its flexibility.

No, I have mine set up the same way. The advantage is that it blocks telemarketing calls. That's indispensible--without DND, I can get up to several spam calls per hour, despite being on the Do Not Call Registry.

DND and Mute are separate functions and need separate icons. Which is what they have. It's just that the Sound icon isn't quite right--it should cycle from Sound to Mute to Vibrate, rather than Sound to Vibrate to Mute.
