How do you turn off background data with ICS to save battery?

On Gingerbread I would keep background data turned off most of time to save battery and now with ICS cant find settings for that?

Use smart actions. I don't have it set on my maxx but on my parents razr i do since their battery isn't quite the same. There have been reports of issues but i restarted my phone a few times and it seems to be fine

If you are referring to the data syncing (email/notifications/et...) which I have always kept off myself to save battery you can turn that off/on using the Power Control widget or by going onto settings then going into Accounts & Sync and turning it off from there.

If you are talking about turning Data off all together then you can go into settings and under the Wireless & Networks section select "More" then Mobile Networks then you can uncheck Data enabled which should turn off data.

Open smart actions.
New smart actions from blank.
On the top bar, press the plus for each trigger
Add motion detector-off.
Add display-off
On the second bar, press plus for each action.
I use cellular data-off
Background sync off too
