How fast is your phone?

I will post this in several different forums so that we can get results for different phones. I hope we get results for Palm's, iPhone's, BlackBerry's, EVO's, Epics, Droids, etc.

Would you please do this Real World test and post your results? If you have multiple phones, please test each phone while connected with WiFi. Times are from when you tap the icon until the app fully opens and is usable.

Real World Speed Test:
1. With no apps running, time how long it takes to open your Facebook app.
2. Close Facebook and time how long it takes to re-open Facebook.
3. Close Facebook and time how long it takes to open Google Maps.
4. Close Google Maps and time how long it takes to reopen Google Maps.

Please cut and paste this Report Score Sheet in your reply:

Real World Speed Test
1. Time to open Facebook:
2. Time to re-open Facebook:
3. Time to open Google Maps:
4. Time to re-open Google Maps:
5. Phone make and model:
6. If Overclocked, Speed:

If you would like to see the effects of rebooting, do the test then reboot your phone and repeat the test.

Basis for the test:
3G or 4G connection speeds vary by location. WiFi should be similar for everyone. Linpack, Quadrant, and others test the CPU only or the graphics system only. This is a real life test of actually opening two very popular apps available on almost every phone. Time to open email, messages, etc. vary with the number of entries and so are not used.

Thanks!

Test threads: Palm PrePalm PixiHTC EVODroid XEpic

Facebook: about one second the first time. Half a second the rest.

Google maps: 3 seconds until usable. 6 Seconds until the map appears on the screen. Half a second the second time to open google maps.

Samsung Epic 4G.

Everything is Stock, so 1Ghz hummingbird. According to Quadrant, the average speed of my processor is 800Mhz. (i don't know how that is)

(edit) I rebooted:

Google Maps: 3 seconds until usable. 4 Seconds until map appears. Half a second every time thereafter.

Facebook: A bit short of 1 second the first time. A bit shorter than half a second every time thereafter.

We need somebody who donated to Hero_Over and got his 1.4GHz overclock kernel to weigh in..

Thank you!

We need more samples but so far the Epic is about 25% faster than the EVO. This is just as many who had both had said.

Could anyone else help?

No problem. By the way, I took a bit of interest and I kept trying on both facebook and maps. Although facebook did not change, I tried maps again and I have a new average.

3 seconds by the time it opens up AND when the map shows. Pretty good I think. That has been the consistent number.

I used to have an Evo for three months, so I will tell you right now that Evo is nowhere close to Epic on performance. Owning an Evo really showed me how Qualcomm processors are inferior to everything else in true, real life performance. (still quick, but when you compare it to everything else out there.)

I updated your numbers to reflect this. Thanks for doing the additional trials.

Please, would some more Epic owners do the tests? It appears that you are in contention to be the fastest in these tests!

Thank you to everyone for your help!

This Epic is the Fastest phone in these tests! Congratuations!

We have gotten 49 responses with 4 tests each covering 16 different phones/speeds.

The initial opening speeds compared to the stock Pre:
• Droid X: 6.9x • iPhone: 3.9x • EVO: 2.9x • Epic: 5.0x • Torch: 6.3x as fast as the stock Pre.

The initial opening speeds compared to the 1 GHz Overclocked Pre:
• Droid X: 4.2x • iPhone: 2.4x • EVO: 1.8x • Epic: 3.1x • Torch: 3.9x as fast as the 1 GHz Pre.

Comparing all four tests to the stock Pre:
• Droid X: 6.9x • iPhone: 6.1x • EVO: 4.4x • Epic: 7.6x • Torch: 7.3x as fast as the stock Pre.

Comparing all four tests to the 1 GHz Overclocked Pre:
• Droid X: 4.1x • iPhone: 3.6x • EVO: 2.6x • Epic: 4.5x • Torch: 4.3x as fast as the 1 GHz Pre.

Other notes
• The 2009 BlackBerry Storm and Bold at ~600 MHz are nearly twice as fast as a 1GHz Pre.
• These apps do not truly close on any of these phones as evidenced by the faster re-open times.
• Other phones tested were 1.8 to 4.2 times the speed of the Palm Pre overclocked to 1 GHz.

I would have to agree:
1. Less than a second.
2. Even faster. Half second maybe.
3. Three to four seconds on first start (with an additional second or two for the map to resolve).
4. Half a second.
5. Phone is a Samsung Epic 4G
6. Stock.

Real World Speed Test
1. Time to open Facebook: 4 Sec
2. Time to re-open Facebook: less than a sec
3. Time to open Google Maps: 5 seconds and an additional 15 sec to load the map
4. Time to re-open Google Maps: less than a sec, map already loaded
5. Phone make and model: Samsung Epic
6. If Overclocked, Speed:1.2 Overclocked running Boss Rom v2

Seeing the same sort of results here.
Facebook first run:1 second
Facebook second run: Almost instant
Google Maps first run: 3.5 seconds
Google Maps second run: Almost instant

Running Mixup kernel at 1.2

Thank you all for your data. I have entered it and it is dead on with what we have gotton so far. The Epic continues to be our leader with an average of 1.4 seconds on all tests. As you have said the re-loads are so fast that you cannot messure it well so that is showing 0.5 seconds.

Thanks! And enjoy the fastest phone.

Faulty EPIC 4G

Real World Speed Test
1. Time to open Facebook: 1.5 sec
2. Time to re-open Facebook: 1.5 sec
3. Time to open Google Maps: 2 sec
4. Time to re-open Google Maps: 1 sec <
5. Phone make and model: EPIC 4G
6. If Overclocked, Speed: N/A

Thank you all for your help! Here is the final report with the new test results above.

In these real world tests, the Epic is the fastest phone.
