How is this still a thing in 2015 and with android 6.0?

I just replaced a old samsing S4 with a nexus 6P and when I synced my contacts my wifes contact picture is still looking like a pixelated mess. I then assigned a nice high rez picture and everything looked fine. Due to some other problems I needed to do a factory reset and when I synced contacts again i got the new picture looking just as pixelated as the old one.. What I am doing wrong?

Does your wife have a profile pic on G+ or a pic set in her phone's contact book? If so, its probably defaulting to that. If not, no clue.

Sometimes on mine, if I open the thumbnail all the way (like you're viewing the contact and then expand the contact's photo), it'll be blurry initially but if I wait about 3 or 4 seconds it clears back up
