How long should I hold on to my Pixel 4?

I've had my Pixel 4 for nearly 3 years and it's been quite solid. I haven't seen a need to get something newer, but the price of the Pixel 6a is pretty attractive. The fact that it's 5G-enabled is a big plus, but Cape Cod has been very slow to roll out 5G, and it still not available where I live. Is there any other compelling reason to retire it before it stops receiving Android updates (rumored to be no earlier than October 2022)?

The 6a will still be around later this year, and you'll also be able to see how the Pixel 7 looks as well. So why not hold onto the 4 for now?

I moved this from the original Pixel 1st gen forum to the Pixel 4 forum for more specific traffic.

I agree that the Pixel 7 might be worth waiting for. Perhaps Google will have Cyber Monday sales similar to the one that prompted me to buy the Pixel 4!

Thanks for moving the post. I didn't initially see the Pixel 4 forum, so I'm glad you did. :)

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you really like Face Unlock, the Pixel 6 line is still waiting for that feature to be added. And it still won't be as secure as the Pixel 4's Face Unlock, due to the latter's Soli chip.

I didn't realize the Pixel 6 line didn't support face unlock. Initially I thought it was a fad, but once I got used to it I found it both secure and convenient. When we all started having to wear masks I would have to remind myself that it wouldn't recognize me!

Google store has been offering good trade in deals on older pixels towards a P6a. They offered me $250 for a P4a5g with a cracked screen. May be tempting if they continue those offers on P7.

Google Fi is offering $100 off the Pixel 7, which has the facial recognition that has eluded the Pixel 6. Part of me is leaning toward a Samsung Galaxy S22 because I can cast it to my Samsung TV, but it's more expensive than the Pixel 7 - for now. Am I patient enough to wait for Cyber Monday deals?

This is the first time I've pre-ordered a phone, especially given the 6s issues, however $300 trade in for my 4 was irresistible. rolling the dice I know

P4xl 128gb = $325 credit towards P7 (+$100 google store credit), so time to jump for me. Noticed the P3XL would still get $275 so may be another year of good trade-in value for the P4 towards a P8.

I haven't checked if it's even a trade-in option, but I will when it comes time to trade in the Pixel 4. "Have I got a deal for you..."

Battery health on my p4xl has dropped significantly in last few months. More motivation to take the p7 upgrade offer. Condolences to whoever ends up with my trade in.
