My device currently says it's paid off and ready to upgrade. How long do you think until it disappears? Verizon cannot deny me the right to trade it in. Correct me if I'm wrong but it can stay like this until february/March when the s8 edge comes out?

Very doubtful. They canceled the payments and such because they expect you to turn it in. You can't hold onto the phone at this point and they can bill you for it if you fail to turn it in.

I would assume a few weeks (2-3) since it shouldn't take that long to get to a store to return it.

That's not the point though. I'm not just getting any phone and I dont have a backup. This is all forced.

When the payments are done, the phone is yours. I paid my G4 off and sold it on eBay when I got a new phone. Am I missing something?

It is forced due to a safety issue. It sucks but that is how it goes. You can either pay for it or return it. There really isn't an option since this isn't Verizon's fault the issue happened.

I am in the same boat. I purchased a refurb phone to hold me over until I can get what I want. It stinks, but it is a means to an end.
