How many Moto X 2014 users have cracked/broken their screens?

I have read many reports of how fragile the phone is with many people having cracked or broken their screens from a fall from as low as 3 feet. This is quite troublesome as the phone itself costs $500 in India and the Motorola service centers ask for an additional $300 if you need to replace the screen in an unfortunate event if you crack the screen.
This leads me to believe the build quality of the phone especially the screen is poor and Motorola needs to make more durable phones.
So was interested to know how many people here have cracked their screens and how much did it cost to get it replaced?

Glass is glass. If you're unfortunate/clumsy enough to drop your phone then depending on how it lands there's a good possibility that the screen will break. Maybe the way that the glass slightly wraps around the edges and corners of the phone doesn't help, but at the end of the day if you drop your phone its your fault and nobody else's. The other option is, of course, to use a case to give you more protection, but there are lots of people who don't like cases due to making the phone more bulky etc. And with this phone in particular cases are less desired simply because if you've paid and gone to the trouble of designing your phone, why would you then want to cover it up with a case?! I think maybe that's why there are a few people cracking their screens with this particular phone. I don't use anything, I'm just extra careful when handling the phone. Maybe one day I'll drop it and it will break, but like I say, that's hardly Motorola's fault is it?

While I certainly don't feel the build quality is poor (quite the opposite in fact), it would be nice to see some phones designed to be more damage resistant rather than thinner and more elegant.

But it is pretty clear we want more fragile phones with thinner, larger designs with less bezel. Some extreme models have made it to the market, but they did not sell well.

All I can say is the build quality of this phone is by far one of the best I have seen and used. I have the MotoCare and do not use a case. Phone looks to good to cover it up.

The glass will shader on any phone. The design of this phone is more prone to take a direct hit to the glass as the edges are rounded to the bezel.

I have had mine since November and had no issues with it. I did buy 2 cases and done use either of them. The phone is too nice without.

Though the Gorilla Glass 3 using in this phone is claimed to be far more durable than before, it still can not survive some kind strong impact.
So using a protective case is a good idea if you want to save your phone in some certain circumstances.

I honestly don't get how so many people have cracked their screens. This phone is pretty slippery so I have dropped this more than I have any other phone, and this thing doesn't have a scratch on it. This has definitely been the most durable phone I have had

Mine fell about 3 feet and landed face down on a tile floor without any consequences. I do have a back cover on it, which might have protected the edges, but I don't have any screen protector on it (wanted tempered glass but none fit - BOO!). And for what it's worth, my 2013 Moto X once took a hard fall and survived without a scratch. It went flying out of my pocket and landed face down on concrete. I have the same type of back protector on that one too. I do feel very lucky, but considering that I once had a phone screen break (pre-Gorilla glass) after gently landing on carpet I have to feel these screens are pretty sturdy. Not unbreakable by any means, but pretty tough - especially if you use a case, screen protector, etc.

Coworker dropped his less than a foot and his screen shattered. I have to have a case on as the white back is way too slippery.

This phone is very slippery. Any phones screen can break from a 12 inch drop if it hits just right.

I customized my phone with a leather back, had it for about a month then as I was exiting my car with too many things in my hand, I dropped my Moto X from about four feet. It landed on my foot then fell on the concrete and the screen had a horizontal crack. I was pissed that it broke on my very first drop and surprised as well because I've had other phones that have dropped in worse conditions with nary a crack.

So I had purchased the accident protection plan ($85 for 2 years coverage) and was able to get a replacement with a deductible payment of $39. They sent me a code which would enable me to order a new phone off Moto Maker but the code does not cover the added cost of a leather back so they said they would reimburse me for that later.

Cost to replace so far is $124

I haven't dropped mine yet so no cracked screen on this phone so far.
I think anytime a phone is dropped you should just feel lucky the screen doesn't crack. As already mentioned in this thread it depends alot on how the phone lands.
I have dropped phones in the past and just had a ding or scratch . I considered myself lucky that the screen didn't crack. The times I dropped phones they were not in a case.

This phone is slippery, so I use a tpu case to prevent myself from dropping it, especially when I'm trying to use it one-handed. I doubt the increased number of cracked screens has to do with build quality here. I imagine it's probably just that fewer people use cases, so they can show off their custom-designed phone. I agree with the post above that said ANY phone's screen can crack from even a short drop on the right hard surface and if it lands just right. My phone has only ever dropped onto carpeted floors, so there's nary a scratch on it.

All around, I've been enjoying my 2014 Moto X since early December. Only thing I miss about the original Moto X is the size & the later camera updates. 2014 X has an awful camera in low light.

To the poster above who had to replace their phone and pay for the leather back in the Moto Maker -- when they credit you for the leather back, check your credit card or bank statement for that closely. My husband had to get his first 2014 Moto X replaced because the one they originally sent had bad RAM or something. They made him pay for the leather back just like you, but his refund was actually about 3-5 cents short of the correct amount!

I've luckily haven't had an issue with drop page. I'd get a tempered glass screen protector. Minor investment to prolong the device life.

Remember the good old Nokia phones. You could run a truck over them and they would still work just fine. Durability of phones these days have been seriously compromised in pursuit of super thin and super slim phones.Would you rather have a durable phone or a super slim phone? I'd take the former any day of the week but most people want the latter so be it.

If you want a durable phone and don't care about how slim it is, just buy it (or any other phone that you like) and put it in an OtterBox Defender case. That's as close to indestructible as you're going to get. You can go on any phones forum and find stories of people that dropped there device and cracked the screen. To say that the build quality is poor because of this is ridiculous. It's like saying that a car is poorly built because if you crash into a telephone pole, it gets all dented up.

Haha, good analogy, and spot on.

True,I had an old flip phone hooked to the handle bars of my bike (back in the day). Short story, phone came loose going 60 mph, bounced off the road, flipped cover got ripped off , battery flew off phone ,got a few scratches. I stopped picked up phone ,, put back together ,it still worked no issues at all.
I don't think a phone of today would stand a chance , LoL Technology is great ,but not as durable in my example :D

My son dropped one of those old Nokia phones off a third-floor balcony once, and even though the screen was kind of messed up, the phone itself still worked.

Regardless, I love the looks, feel, and function of the Moto X and don't miss those old phones one bit. Considering how slim these newer phones are, it's amazing how well they do when dropped sometimes, and there are really good options for protection that weren't available in, let's say, 1992.

My White and Bamboo one took a short fall from a end table onto my wood floor screen down and got cracked up pretty good. These phones look great naked but IMO seem to be more fragile.

Dropped it onto a padded chair, then bounced onto a carpet floor, but that's the only time I've dropped it. I'm using the phone without a case. No scratches or cracks on my screen, and I'm hoping to keep it that way :)
