How Much External Storage can I add to the Galaxy Note 5?

I know I can get a Micro SD card...and even use an External Hard Drive with an OTG cable.
But how large a card can I use? Will 128GB work, and does it have to be formatted as FAT32? If FAT32, what good would 128GB be? I mean if we try to use 128GB in a PC a FAT32 format will only see 32GB, won't it?

Any suggestions for a good card for this Note 5? We also have a TAB S2, and assume the same will apply.

Thank you.

The SD card can be up to 2TB (which isn't made yet). The format has to be exFAT. (If you format a 128GB card as FAT32, you'll have HUGE clusters - saving a small text file will take megs of space on the card.)

I'm not sure about using a thumb drive on an OTG cable, but I know my phone sees my 2TB network drive. It will probably see a 128GB thumb drive too - if it's formatted exFAT. Since the SDXC specification calls for exFAT, manufacturers are free to do what they want with SDXC cards formatted as FAT32 - ignore them, misread them, only see the first 32GB of them - nothing is guaranteed, and the same card may be seen differently by different devices.

If you have to use a format other than exFAT, use ext2 (although Windows will need a helper program to read it, while it reads and writes exFAT natively. Linux, OTOH, doesn't, except in Android devices.)

So, if we buy a new card...say 128GB or even 64GB, will it be exFAT, or are you saying that is something I will have to look at to be sure. I never even knew that Windows (10 or even XP) could format in exFAT.

I personally prefer a usb drive over a micro sd card. Because i can easily transfer stuff between my fone and my pc or laptop. I have a 128gb flash drive and it works fine with otg cable.

I use a dual ended SanDisk thumb drive for external, and also have other drives that use an adapter. Very handy to have.
