How smart is the auto-dark theme?

Been mulling over this and I wonder if it applies to other live wallpapers (not the Google-made ones) as well. I've cycled to a couple of dark Muzei wallpapers (taken from Muzei's Reddit plugin) and the themes remain white. These are on images that are darker than some images that trigger the dark theme on the default Google Wallpapers.

Anyone else notice the same from other live/static wallpapers?


Edit: Using the image downloaded straight from Reddit and applied as a wallpaper using Google Photos, the system theme turns dark... seems to be only applying the right theme if using the default wallpaper apps then....

When I was playing with the Pixel 2 in VZW I downloaded a really dark image and set it as the wallpaper. It did not trigger the dark theme. Guess there might be more to it that I missed.

It's very possible it was in demo mode and that was preventing it from working properly. There were reports of people not being able to do portrait mode on the store models, even though know one who received one had issues. So I'm guessing that demo mode locks down most of the features.

Does the Dark Mode activate only when using the awful Pixel Launcher or does it still work with third party launchers too?

I just set a pure black image I downloaded and it switched automatically to the dark theme.

I do find that what I would consider dark isnt dark enough to trigger the switch, but it definitely switches if you get one dark enough. The automatic switch is neat, but I really do hope that they will give is the choice one day.

(Yes, dov, I would assume it only works for the "awful" Pixel launcher. The reason you choose other launchers is to give you more choice, not less)

Yeah it seems to work that way on images or the stock Google wallpapers. So far it doesn't seem to work on third party live wallpapers like Muzei or 3D Image Live Wallpaper.
