How to access the device from PC without using the screen to change USB settings?

Hi all,

Hope you can help me. My screen has got completely trashed and I am trying to back up some of the files from the phone to PC.
Before, I had to swipe down and change the USB settings from Charging to File Transfer, however now that the screen is broken I cannot do that, so when I plug the phone to the PC it only comes up as a Portable Media Player.

Does anyone have any solution?

Many thanks in advance.

I guess you weren't aware that in Developer options -> Select USB Configuration you could preset whatever you wanted the default to be?

Too late for that now, but in the future it might be useful to know.

Anyway, you say that it appears as a media player - what happens when you try to look at it using Explorer?

Yeah, I didn't know you can set that as a default behaviour :(

Cannot see anything now.
I was trying to install different drivers with Nexus Root Toolkit but no luck.

Not to hijack, but I have my stock (now 7.0) N9 set to MTP in DO's but still have to choose File Transfer from the pull-down shade. What am I missing? Same for my N5 on 6.

Sorry, I think you're SOL.

There was a multimedia dock for my Samsung Galaxy S3 that provided HDMI output (so I could at least see the screen using HDMI if the device screen got buggered up) but I haven't seen anything like that for the 6P.

This is a common situation at uBreakiFix and other repair stores. What we usually do is plug a screen in temporarily to just get the notification & get the PC to recognize the phone; then data can be transferred and all. Of course, we charge for it, and also the 6P isn't a phone that makes this an easy process (unlike, say, the Galaxy S4 or something). They most likely will not have a screen just sitting around in stock; so you'd have to work out a deal with them in purchasing a screen (expensive) at a little less in the hopes that someone else will have a broken 6P wanting their screen fixed later on after you just temporarily use the screen for a moment.
