Google Now is a great app and I use it all the time. Getting weather updates, traffic alerts for my commute, following my favorite sports teams and news alerts through Google Now is fast and easy. The widget will display "no cards" when you first add the widget to your home screen and also when you restart your phone. The widget will display cards for your information once you open and setup the app and after it pulls data related to your preset interest. On first use you need to go through the settings and tailor the type of cards you want displayed and the type of notifications you want to receive. By default all the services are on, you may want to limit that to only the items of your particular needs. Once you open the app just go into the settings you can turn cards and notifications on or off by item category. The sample cards can be swiped away to dismiss them. Voice commands in Google Now are great too, check out this link for more info Getting the most out of Google Now voice actions | Android Central
