How to clear rooted phone?

Ok, so I was new to the whole Android smart phone thing at the start of the year so I purchased a VM Optimus V Slider to "get my feet wet". Thanks to the fine posts pinned to the top of this forum I was able to root my phone and make a backup.
I then proceeded to install the Gellato ROM and GingerKernel and made a backup of that.
I then flashed the Mobster ROM and GingerKernel and made a backup of that.
I've enjoyed playing with Android enough that I decided to upgrade to the Evo V 4G (ICS is big for me as I'm a Chrome user).
I now want to give my old Optimus V Slider to my wife. We've successfully ported over her phone #, but is there any way to clear/reset the phone to get rid of all my settings/apps, etc?
I know I'm not supposed to do the Factory reset through Settings on the phone but I did try the reset through the Recovery and it just put me in a boot loop. I ended up having to restore to my original backup which allowed the phone to boot again but still has my (original) settings.

Any advice on how to reset this phone for a new user would be appreciated!

Solved

Ok, it would appear my problem was I was trying to do the factory reset while running one of the custom ROMs and Gingerkernel. Once I restored to my original backup (stock ROM/Kernel) and then attempted the Factory Reset from recovery it properly wiped everything and reset the phone like new.
I'm not going to reapply the custom ROM/Kernel and hand this sucker over to the wife.

Thanks to those who post on this forum for all the delicious information!
