I'm planning to get rid of my current phone.

It doesn't sound like a simple factory reset will overwrite all data so that it is completely unrecoverable.

How can I make sure all of the data currently in the phone's internal memory has been completely overwritten?
A recent article suggested using a program like Shredroid, but many of the reviews raise questions about how reliable and secure these are.

Need suggestions for other programs that are known to be reliable and effective.

You could try flashing a stock RUU a couple times. It overwrites the phone's internal memory reloading a fresh copy of the operating system. Basically, the point is making multiple writes on the internal memory to ensure overwriting existing data which makes it more difficult to put it back together. Although practically, I would think that even just one flash of an RUU would suffice as someone would need some pretty heavy duty forensic data recovery tools to even attempt recovery of any fragments that may remain. Otherwise, the only other guaranteed way is to physically destroy the device.

See my post here for links to the RUU's:
