How to delete photos from the message album.

There is an individual message photo album for everyone I've sent text messages to. I would like to delete photos from the album but the only option available is to save, they're still there even though I've deleted them from the message view screen and the gallery. I don't use any automatic backups and I don't use any sort of cloud storage. What the heck is going here?
