I have googled my question and found these instructions:
Uninstalling apps

  1. Step 1 of 9. Slide your finger upwards on the screen.
  2. Step 2 of 9. Press Play Store.
  3. Step 3 of 9. Press the profile icon.
  4. Step 4 of 9. Press Manage apps & device.
  5. Step 5 of 9. Press Manage.
  6. Step 6 of 9. Press the required app.
  7. Step 7 of 9. Press Uninstall.
  8. Step 8 of 9. Press Uninstall.
What is a profile icon?

It's the profile picture for the Google Account that's being used to access the Play Store. It usually shows up on the top right corner.

Additionally (and recommended) you should manage your apps directly from the Phone's Settings (Settings/Apps). You'll see a list of all apps in your phone and will give you options for each one to enable/disable/uninstall (note that system apps may not be disabled/uninstalled).

And also keep in mind that it might not be possible to uninstall some bloatware apps that you might not consider to be essential to the system (like Facebook, for example). The manufacturer or carrier will sometimes do this, although it's a lot better now than it was in the past.

Thanks for your advice.. I click on Play Store shown in my Home Screen so am not aware I use a Google Account. There is a C in a circle at the top right corner. When I click on it it seems to be telling me I am using a Google Account. Don't know how am I doing that when I have never signed into that account.
Looking at Settings then Apps I can't see any way to get rid of unwanted apps and so increase storage space for stuff I do want . As an example I have no interest in Meet (whatever that is!) but the only options shown are Open Disable Force Stop. Shall I assume it is one of the many apps that I can't get rid of?

Can't speak for how you signed into a Google account (but I'd check if it's yours or someone you know, as you cannot use the Play Store without signing into one). If an app doesn't show the UNINSTALL option at the bottom then yes, that means it's an app that is either system-critical or forced by the manufacturer (some manufacturers have deals with other companies like Microsoft, etc. so those apps are bundled in and cannot be uninstalled, just disabled).
