How to do bulk deletes with the Gmail app?

Why isn't there a select all button in the app? I have no use saving most of my messages and want to empty the spam. There must be an easier way then checking individual messages page after page.

The only other way I've figured out is long pressing one email, then selecting each email you want to delete by pressing on it. You can avoid check boxes that way. It's a bit quicker.

Edit. Huh, never mind. I was going from memory with what the phone version of GMail can do and you can hide the check boxes on it but not the N7 version. Weird.
