I did the unofficial manual update to 2.2 now i want to downgrade to 2.1 and get the OTA update. any help? on my evo btw

Why? there shouldnt be any difference between the OTA and USB push from HTC.

The software version numbers are different. I did the same thing. The official version is .6 and the usb push version was .3 The leaked version was . 1 I installed the .3 version. I suspect that some of the bugs may have been ironed out in the .6

I am seriously considering doing a factory reset (killing every downloaded app, contact, text message, setting, note and app data in my phone) and trying the OTA install that way.

Yes, the bad is I will lose all of the above (This is VERY BAD). Even if I Backed it up, there is no way to restore the data and text messages (to my knowledge)

The good is my phone will be given a fresh start. And this time, starting off with the newest build of Froyo.

I'm still deciding

If you wanted to wipe the device how would it go back to 2.1?

A factory reset only resets the phone back to the basic, most recent OS that was installed w/o any extras you've put on the phone - it won't take you back to 2.1 - unless I'm mistaken.

I'm fairly convinced that's true. The phone doesn't keep a backup of the operating system stored away in some corner of the ROM, so it won't be able to restore 2.1 without further user intervention. You would have to obtain an official 2.1 image to go back, so...

I've never tried updating over USB, but if that's something HTC do officially, then I would assume they'll put up the most current 2.2 release shortly. They've got a lot on their table at the moment though. :)

Yeah it wont go back to 2.1(from 2.2) just from doing the factory restore thing .

A friend had the Eris and did a factory restore before they sold it and it had 2.1 OS on it . (it came brand new from store with 1.5 OS on it) .After my friend factory restored the Eris it still had 2.1 OS on it.

You could find a 2.1 file and try to push that over USB and then do the OTA upgrade after that.
