How to download, extract (password protected) .rar files

I'm looking for the best method (concise and easy) to download .rar files, with the ability to specify the download location namely my SD card, and a method of extracting the .rar files (some of which are password protected). I'm hoping someone can walk me through this process, as I am fairly competent but not a wizard as I know many of u are. I have an unrooted Droid x2. Additionally, if someone could direct me to the best tutorial about how to root an android phone, with instructions in layman's terms I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Generally, if you download any file, by typical means, it will download it to the "download" folder on your sd card. If you do not have an sd card, I suspect it will download to the "download" folder on your internel memory. As far as a "zip" file, you should be able to extract it, as with an Rar file I believe, along with the help of a good file manager such as astro. Note I have never extracted an "rar" file before on Android. And actually, I use three file managers, depending on what I am going to do.

As far as rooting, procedures differ amongst devices, so without knowing what you have, nobody can point you in the right direction.

There are no "laymans terms", just step by step instructions. But if you have any questions, please ask us before you do something.... silly... Better than dealing with the aftermath

Go to xda-developers.com and look in the Droid x2 forums. I'm sure you'll find all the info you need there.

I can help you with unzipping password-protected zip files. Search for ArchiDroid in the market and it will do your job... It extracts password-protected RAR, ZIP, TAR, GZIP, BZIP2 and 7zip files... amazingly it is free... Other apps didn't work for me but this one works like a charm

Also, you can rename a rar file to a zip file, and you should be able to extract it that way.
