Hi - Does anyone have detailed instructions on how to stop these 2 applications permanently ? I stop them from within the Running Apps menu and then from within the ALL Apps menus and it still starts up again later. Thanks.

You can disable them by uninstalling any updates then selecting "disable" from the app management screen.

If you simply say "no, thanks" to having them do any sync they won't use much data (Address Book used 17k of data before I disabled it and hasn't shown up since, Locker has never used any data). Once told not to sync, they also take up little to no CPU or battery.

They take up a little memory, sure, but the phone's got plenty.

Your call either way.

Hi Nate - Thanks for the tips. I was able to disable the Locker using your instructions however the Address Book 'disable' is greyed out ( I suspect it'll pop up running again.)
I am trying to free up as much memory as I can. My free memory varies between 750-1000 MB with only email, weather, wifi and data on primarily. When I shut the phone off and power
up again the free memory goes to approx 1.1-1.2 GB but then drifts down again, even though I don't have anything running in task manager, other than the apps I mentioned above ( and after I optimize the RAM).

Honestly, Android after FroYo doesn't need you managing its free volatile memory (RAM). It will intentionally keep idle apps in memory because it's cheaper to leave them there than have to re-load them next time you use them. If it runs out of memory, it will and SHOULD decide all by its lonesome what apps need to get relegated to the dustbin.

Clearing apps out of memory just leaves empty, wasted stretches of memory that still need to be maintained as such by the OS, then the next time you (or the OS) runs the app it just has to be read back from long-term storage and reloaded into memory again, which costs time, CPU, and battery life.

Stop second-guessing the kernel and start enjoying your phone. :D

EDIT: This is differentiated from apps in permanent storage, which can only be removed by uninstalling them, of course. I'm talking about running applications, which a lot of people buy software like task killers and the like to manage. They're just a waste of money and system resources.

what he said....

This!

The more I follow thread about safe to freeze or remove apps on my phone, The more I fudge with it, The worse my battery life gets.

I'm down to just leave it alone and leave it run, especially since I have a Mac and can't flash anything or even root it.
