how to HIDE apps icons from home screen

Is there a way to HIDE, not remove, the apps icons on the home screen? Similar to how you can hide icons from your desktop in Windows.

I just want to hide them so my wallpaper stands out.

If you longpress an icon, the trash can will appear at the bottom. Drag the icon to the trash. the icon and app will still be in your app screen (4-dot button).

On iOS 4.0.4 u can just pinch (zoom) and they disappear opposite to.get them back
