How to hide notifications when the screen is on

I'm using HTC One E8 and updated to 5.0.1. Now when I receive notifications from whatsapp, it will show the content of the message at the top of the screen which i really hate because people can read it when I was showing something else to them. Is there any way to change it? Please help. Thanks!

Go to settings>sound & notification>app notifications. You can turn off notifications there. Not sure if whatsapp uses a notification badge or not though. Might be a problem if they don't

Before this update when 4.4.2 Kitkat was there...we can go to messaging app then from settings we can hide the message preview but in this 5.0 lollypop there is no such setting plz help me beacause due to message preview private message are seen by others also

If you're using the stock SMS app, launch the app>tap the 3 dot menu button>settings>notifications>uncheck heads-up notification.

Afraid not. With lollipop max priority notifications are displayed as drop down

Not sure about WhatsApp because I've never used it. The stock SMS app is the messaging app that came preinstalled on the phone.
