How to hide the menu bar

On my S8+ the menu bar at the bottom you could hide it and then reopen it when you touched it but on the Note 8 mine never hides except when it is locked and I don't know if that is a setting or mine just doesn't work. It always stays open. And on the S8+ when using the web it also had a dot beside the recently use apps that you could tap on and your web page would show full view without the menu and back buttons showing. I haven't been able to find a setting to choose but I don't think it's a option because I don't remember selecting it if there was.
I also have a hard time waking my phone up by tapping the screen, I shouldn't have to do that. The S8+ I could just tap, tap twice and it would wake up and I thought the Note 8's was pretty much the same phone as the S8's but has a pen and better apps so what am I missing?

Sometimes it's handy hiding that bar, sometimes it's handy having it stay. Nice to have a choice isn't It?

Yes, I do like that
