How to i get the Google Voice search from the Google app to stop popping up when i have earbuds in?

I have a Nexus 7 with the latest Lollipop update on it. The 'Google' app recently tried to update. First around a month ago. Then I had to uninstall the updates and this problem went away, but it recently tried to update again. This time it didn't go away when I uninstalled the updates. It constantly brings up a screen as if it's trying to voice search, and it is disrupting everything. It only happens when the ear buds are in. I have tried to turn Google voice off in the settings to no avail. Can someone please help Mr straighten this problem out? It's really irritating. Thanks!
