How to improve network seek time?

My Nexus 4 takes 1-3 minutes to grab onto a signal, it seems like it wants to check for every available network in range, instead of just going to the last network I had selected. Toggling airplane mode just makes it take longer - minimum 1 minute from toggling for it to show any signal. Setting to WCDMA only doesn't seem to help (even though my network only roams on GSM), and the phone process stops every time I try to select a specific band.
