How to increase call quality on ALL Motorola Droids

Thanks for the link. Looks easy, appears to be legit.

Question... why would the default setting NOT have the best call quality? Is it that a "better" setting that default drains battery faster and thus the manufacturer and carrier defaulted to a "lower" setting to increase battery?

I'm not doubting the information you supplied and I am truly grateful for the heads up and the link. I'm just curious as to why the best isn't standard.

Can the OP (or anyone) comment on that?

I do not have an official statement from Verizon or Motorola etc, but I can assume it's b/c of the theory that it drains the battery faster with it enabled. Most phone manufacturers wouldn't want a feature that you can live without enabled if it drains your battery and weakens their product. But as I stated in the final paragraph of the article, I've been using the EVRC-B for a long time on my original Droid and I never noticed my battery draining faster. I also only make about 4 phone calls a day on my phone though. I'm a textaholic!

thanks, yeah, I saw the info regarding your use and how you saw no great change in battery life.

I also do very minimal actual phone calls - lots of emails and texts - but, not many phone calls.

I switched the setting. We'll see.

thanks again!

It is not enabled for a reason. EVRC-B is not enabled everywhere. If there is no EVRC-B then, from what I understand, you will not be able to make calls. Do not do this if you use your phone when traveling or make a note of how to change it back...

I was having brutal trouble with static after only owning my droid for one month. It suddenly appeared and got worse and worse. To fix it, take off the battery and blow out the internals (as you would an old n64 game) . this fixed the problem immediately for me. Idk if it was just dust build up interfering with the antenna or something else, but my quality is crystal clear again.

haha that made me laugh, but if it worked, i'm glad!

I don't think that's true. I went to the vzw store with my X today because of crappy earpiece noise and the rep did exactly what is in this thread. He wouldn't do it if the phone wouldn't work everywhere. He did say it drains the battery bit.

And, for the record, it didn't fix my problem. Returning for a new one.

I went against the advice in that article and changed a different setting. I changed the Mobile P_REV to the highest one, 9 I think. My signal went from -82 using default setting to -61 using the new setting. At first my data connection was a little finicky but once it locked on all is good. It also seemed to change the scale that the signal bars are based on. Now if my signal is -72 or worse I have 3/4 bars yet before anything better than -85 was 4/4 bars. My question is what does this setting do?

I also ran speed test to compare before and after, it's the same.

this didn't really seem to make a difference for me. we were on EVRC by default.
I switched to -B and it we didn't notice a difference.

I di this on a Droid and a Droid X didn't really see any signal difference but the call quality was significantly improved.

There's two places that it looks like we need to change to EVRC-B. The other one is in the test options menu, on the third screen you can select network type or something similar. EVRC is default but I changed it to -B also. Does my theory sound right or do we just need to change the one?

Just an FYI the reason EVRC-B is not used by default is because it's not supported in all areas of the country. Some of you may find that after setting your phone to use EVRC-B you may not be able to make outgoing calls.

I enter the number in the dialer and it comes up with a menu with different programs to open it up with. What am I doing wrong?

Attached is a picture of the menu that comes up. Thanks for any help.

I had done this previously to my Droid-X, but recently did a reser because of the smart profile issue. I've since also rooted my phone. Nothing fancy, did it just because I could and installed the mobile hotspot app.

Here's the strange part. I just tried to use this procedure to check my setting. When I press Send - instead of a menu the browser (Dolphin is the default) opens and does a google search on the number I entered ##program.

Anyone else see this happen?

Thanks for the info, blake. I'm trying it, can't wait to hear a call...too bad it's after midnight!
If it improves or not, drains the battery or not, I just love tinkering! More hidden menus, more nuts and bolts! Keep em coming!
