How to listen to music off an SD card while continuing to do other things with the phone

While listening to music off my SD card, if I do anything else, like check text messages, it closes the media file. I basically can't listen to files and do other things with the phone at the same time. Has anyone found a way around this?

Which app are you using to play music? Does it happen if you save the file to internal memory? No matter where the file is stored, it should still be playing UNLESS the app you're using is limited to only foreground processes (which would 'kill' it as soon as you leave the app).
