How to lite action buttons

The 3 action buttons at the bottom of my phone are intermittently lit. What is causing them be off at times and on at others? Thx!

They light up with the light sensor. If it's dark, they illuminate so you can see them. If it's bright, they don't light up, since you can probably already see them.

I will keep on eye on but seems there has been no relationship to light exposure.

Try going into a dark room with the light off, such as the bathroom, and wake the phone. Take notice of the buttons. They should be illuminated. Then turn the light on. The buttons should turn off.
