How to recover deleted messages?

[Android Central Question]

I didn't know until today that this is in settings: "Delete the oldest message when the maximum number of text (1000) messages has been exceeded"

Today when I found that in settings- I clicked on the button and I turned that off.

I lost some of my old messages because of this. Is there a way to recover my deleted messages?

The phone is Samsung Galaxy J3 Emerge by the way. I got a new phone last month and I wanted to check my old phone (Samsung Galaxy J3 Emerge) for important old messages.

Welcome to Android Central! I'm afraid you're out of luck. You could try asking your carrier if they archive messages, but I don't think so.

You could try SMS Backup & Restore Text, Recover Deleted Message.

Seems like the way that app works is that it restores the now missing message from a previous backup that the app created.

The only other way, since messages are saved in a database file, is to root the phone, then find the file and edit it to find the missing texts (if they haven't been overwritten). Backing up is a lot easier (but not possible after deleting a text).
