Like many of you, my wife and I are experiencing random reboots - too many of them!

I just a few min ago had a reboot happen to me as I was typing up an email I was fwding :( (no, it didnt save it in drafts).

My wife's phone rebooted while using gps and got caught without google maps directions - not to forget mentioning that gps lock takes more time now.

Verizon & HTC, what kind of an update is this?

(yeah i know they tweeted back to Phil)

So in the meantime, while they try and untangle this, anyone know how to remove the latest OTA? (if possible).
My wife and I were better off without it.

Just a question, Have you guys tried factory resets? I know I sounds like a bad rep but 5 people I know that were getting issues from the OTA did this and now they are fine for the last few days..

Give it a shot

Also cant remove the OTA unless your rooted..

Oh kay... noob question in 3... 2... 1... What do i have to do to perform a factory reset? and I know this will more than likely wipe my phone, what are my options for backing up all of my apps and contact list?

Here is what I did. I downloaded My Backup Pro and performed a backup. Then do the factory reset. Most of your Apps and contacts will be restored once you put your Google Account info back in after the reset. Whatever doesn't come back you can restore quite easily from My Backup Pro. It even restores your homescreen layouts. Word of advice though, use My Backup Pro before doing the Google Account stuff. I think this may even bring back your saved game data and all that. If you do Google first then it just re-downloads all the games and your saved game info is gone.

Factory reset does not remove the OTA, it just wipes /data and cache.

Only way on non-rooted phones would be to gain temp root, change the main version to something lower than 1.12.605.6 (ie 1.12.605.1) then flash the 1.12.605.6 RUU.

This would wipe all data on the device (not the sdcard).

But in the event a corrupted system file or setting is to blame the those settings would be brought back as well. Also doent MBP require root?

To answer the ops question:

Menu =) Settings =) SD and Phone Storage =) Factory Data Reset

This WIIL wipe all of the data off of tour phone. Back up your contacts via google or the Verizon Backup Assistant. There are apps in the market to back up your text messages and data from angry birds. Data on the SD card will not be touched. You can back up the apps to the SD card via astro file manager or app monster just in case but normally good le will download those automatically as soon as you sign into the market.

Well this is the method I used and after 2 days now, no more random reboots.

MyBackupPro does not require root. Your method would work fine just a lot more work. MyBackupPro does it all in one step for the most part. Then again it costs $5 but I talked Verizon into issuing me a $5 credit to cover that.

Read the Non-Root Users section here. Looks like that should take you from unrooted MR1 to the factory 1.12.605.6

Depends how you're using it. Believe it can backup/restore settings related stuff without root but to backup app data and restore data/market links, it requires root. It's well worth the $5 though. I've used it since the OG Droid and it's paid for itself more times than I can count.

Just did a factory reset because of the same issues. Hopefully it did the trick. I didn't use backup pro but google restored all my downloaded apps and contacts. Just had to redo the homescreen layouts.

good. i see i do have some options.

in the meantime, i've toggled myself off of permanent 3g and put myself back to 4g to see if it has something to do with it.
the whole time since we got OTA, my wife and i who are in a strong 4g area, have both had 3g locked so that it wont go to 4g. so far today, knock on computer keyboard, i havent had a reboot yet today! :-)

Keep us updated. Interested to hear if a factory reset resolved the reboots. Did not for me.

Update

So did the factory reset and it's been 4 days now without a random reboot. Phone runs a lot smoother too. Think that did the trick.

meh, after owning a Fascinate, Samsung has a lot of mending to do to their US support reputation before I'll own another. My Thunderbolt is already running Gingerbread. Lets see how long that takes the Charge folks.

As it was explained to me by a Verizon rep (and rooted TB user), the factory reset clears up the reboot issue, which was likely caused because the OTA update was not complete. He stated that the reset will cause it to "finish" downloading the update, thereby eliminating the problem.

Based on the comments by people who reset their phones and haven't had the issue, it seems he may be right.

Also, his rooted TB is running Gingerbread and he says he can't wait 'til the official Gingerbread updatae comes out. He couldn't say when because there's no official announcement, but he said Gingerbread is definitely coming to the TB.

Running gingerbread Rom stops the reboot? Any recommendation on where or which on Rom in Rom manager to dl?

They will be waiting till Christmas to enjoy their Gingerbread, while the rest of us will be feasting on it this summer.

Of course, the reboots are caused by something int he OS changed by the update (and possibly aggravated by something in the network) and if you upgrade to Gingerbread you have a new OS with different code.
