I just got a new Pixel 2 XL and many of the apps (email, contacts, calendar, messages, etc.) have a circle with a + in it floating in the bottom right corner. Is there anyway to remove this icon, I find it annoying.

I have found that by installing different apps (for email and messaging) the circle is not there. I would like to remove it completely.

Thanks in advance.

Since there is no way for me to reply to the Answers, I will edit the question.

If this is a part of the Material Design, then everything I dislike about my new phone keeps relating back to Material Design, and all of the answers end with "get used to it".
Is there a replacement for Material Design?

Can you post a screenshot of what you're seeing? The default launcher doesn't have a floating for with a plus sign on it.

They do however get little coloured dots when you get a new notification, but they don't have plus signs.

EDIT: Oh when you're in the app. That's the button to create a new message/appointment/email/whatever. No it can't be turned it because it's pretty of the app itself.

Do you mean the create new message or whatever action button? That's just the Material Design language...

That circle with the + inside represents a quick way to create new conversations in email or text messaging apps. A quick way to create new calendar events. I have the same thing as well in my apps. I don't think there is a way to remove it. You will just have to get used to it.

Now I can reply, that is strange??
how can I remove Material Design?

You can't. Material Design is just what Google calls it design standards that it's setting for Android and their apps. It's not something that you can change. Android is customizable, but that doesn't mean you can alter stuff that other people created. The only way to get rid of those is to use apps that don't follow Material Design guidelines and use those instead of the ones Google makes, or if you're techy enough, rewrite your own apps.

You can't.

The applications themselves are designed with the material design language. It's not something that can be turned off or changed.

If you really don't like the FAB (floating action bar), then you'll have to download and use applications that don't have it.

Ok. so I either need to find apps that don't use the Material Design or get a different phone.

The UI of this phone is really cumbersome and counterintuitive. Part of the problem is that I am left handed, and the UI is not friendly to Left handed operation.

The other problems I have is just how annoying it is to use. The floating button is frankly annoying. the "slide from left to right for menu" is annoying. I know these are personal preferences so I just need to find what works for me. I switched from Chrome to Opera for this reason.

Thanks to all who replied.

Material Design is the design language that Google is pushing for not only their service apps, but all Android developers. It's up to them if they adopt it or not. The phone isn't your issue. You can change phones and still run into Material Design. Just focus on finding developers that haven't adopted MD.

Have you considered an iPhone? You might be happier with the iOS UI design language.
Most Android devices will have some flavor of the Material Design UI; even if their OS interface is customized (ex. MIUI) the apps themselves may follow the Material Design guidelines. Sorry.

Welcome to the forums. You can change the layout direction on many screens if you enable RTL (Right to Left) in the developer options. The floating action button won't be removed, but it will change its position to the left and the side menu will be available on the right side. This will work for most Google apps, but not for many third party ones.

I know this is not a solution for your problems, but you could try this trick and see if it helps a bit, specially being left-handed.

I will play with the RTL, that is interesting. I think ultimately I will need to find a different OS. Too many apps use the Material Design language. I am stuck with this phone for the next 2 years so I need to find a way to make it useful.
I may need to try IOS. With Google's implementation of MD, I am finding their services more difficult to deal with. Apple may be the way to go. Microsoft isn't even a consideration.

your crazy, material design is the best thing they've ever implemented. everything looked colorful, simple, and awesome. I love everything about the design language, that's why I use Google apps specifically for almost everything 😎

I have honestly never seen anyone complain about MD or the action buttons before. Not to invalidate the fact that you don't like it, though. What phone did you have previously?

I'm embarrassed to admit I don't know anything about it.
