How to retrieve an offline map in Google Maps?

Device Description : Nexus 4, Maps v 7.4.0,
With some difficulty I figured out how to cache a map offline. But the trouble is, how do I retrieve it (when no internet connectivity)? Can someone please help?

As far as I know you'll get it automatically when you're in the area that you've cached.
But note, while without a data connection you can't set up a navigation route or use the search ... you've to do this before, as long you've a data connection.
But make sure that your route won't leave the cached area
The new Google Maps version 7 is rather useless without a data connection

Thanks Adamsberg, but the point of an 'offline map' is to be able to retrieve it when offline. It was perfectly possible in earlier version of Google Maps.

Yep, one was able to store six maps, each up to 80MB, and retrive them every time they want to use it.
Now that's history with Google Maps ... now you can only cache a map area and that's the area you'll see as map when you're without a data connection.
Not sure if you can cache several areas ... but I think a new cached area will overwrite the former.

BTW, for what do you want to use offline maps? There might be others, better as Google Maps

You can type OK maps into the search bar to cache maps, each time you do this it does not overwrite the previously cached area. To retrieve, you open maps while offline then find the area which will have been cached. I live in New Zealand and have managed to cache the whole of our North Island on maps and view it all while offline. I have an N7 2013.

Did you manage to know how much cache MB you're allowed to use?
Maybe the same amount as on the former version 6 which was 6x80MB?

A bit late with this... but here goes: I've cached the maps I need in an area that is built up, but the start of my journey is straight forward and is not cached. Can I be offline and access the cached maps once I'm into the journey, or do I need wifi?
